Sometimes I draw
I started drawing roller coasters at age 3, when I became “obsessed” with building them.
Later, I became obsessed with drawing cars and motorcycles and boats. My dad keeps a 3/4-view (isometric) napkin drawing of a Lamborghini that I sketched from memory at age 4 while we were sitting at a restaurant. That’s the one he attributes to altering him immediately that I would grow up to be a designer and engineer, and making sure that I would always have access to sketching and CAD classes and other tools required to develop these interests and capabilities.
At age 8, my parents signed me up for CAD classes with an industrial engineer that worked for my father; there I learned Rhino—and designed my first 3D models. At age 10, they hired a well-known artist (Bill Rose) to work with me and teach me useful techniques. The drawings framed and featured in this video were done by me at that time.
I’m constantly in a position of needing to draw and sketch as a way to communicate; and also to problem solve. It’s something I really enjoy being able to do quickly and effectively.
